About this piece
February is an original watercolor by upstate New York artist Sherry H. Holmes, depicting a winter landscape beneath a turbulent, overcast sky.
Holmes builds the scene with layered gray, blue, brown, and rust-colored washes, allowing areas of white paper to suggest snow across the ground and distant landscape. Sparse vegetation and dark vertical forms break through the snow, while the heavily worked sky gives the composition a distinctly cold and unsettled atmosphere.
The painting demonstrates Holmes’s strength in using transparent watercolor to suggest weather, season, and depth without relying on tightly rendered detail. The restrained winter palette is punctuated by warmer earth tones, giving the scene visual movement and contrast.
The watercolor is signed “S. HOLMES” at lower right and titled “February” on the verso.
Presented in its existing frame.
